Daniel Geffin is a Food Technologist/Consumer Safety Officer with the FDA Center for Safety and Applied Nutrition. He serves as one of three technical experts in the office that regulates Low Acid Canned Foods and Acidified Foods and has responsibilities for evaluating of a variety of preservation technologies used to render hermetically sealed food containers commercially sterile. Technologies include, thermal processing, formulation control, acidification, fermentation, water activity control, controlled atmosphere, selectively permeable barriers and use of permitted preservatives. Dan also provides expert consultation on pending compliance cases, is involved in enforcement activities, as well as outreach and capacity building with foreign trade partners. He has worked in various regulatory and policy roles within FDA, both in the U.S. and based abroad, for over 20 years.
