On January 26, 2023, FDA published a notice regarding consumer research they planned to conduct regarding front-of-pack nutrition labeling schemes. IDFA staff worked with the IDFA Nutrition and Health Committee and the IDFA Standards and Labeling Committee to develop comments to FDA on the proposed research.
The comments stressed the:
- Need for transparency from FDA. FDA can start by sharing the results of past research and also the details of the planned consumer research
- Need for identification of measures of success of the research
- Need to reflect the population of the U.S. in consumer testing
- Need to reflect the full nutrient profile of foods, not just “nutrients to limit,” in labeling scheme testing
