A Data-Based Initiative to Identifying New and Emerging Opportunities for Diversifying U.S. Dairy Exports
The U.S. dairy industry is at an inflection point. Over the past 20 years, global dairy demand and U.S. dairy exports have steadily increased. However, to sustain long-term growth, the industry cannot continue relying on five markets to absorb more than half (58%) of all U.S. dairy exports.
To support a more diversified and resilient market strategy, IDFA presents the second installment of Project Diversify, analyzing Central Asian markets based on stability, demand and growth trends, as well as infrastructure and logistics capacity. The report identifies Uzbekistan as the region’s high-potential market.
Project Diversify’s data-based analyses are designed to inform investment strategies for IDFA members and guide U.S. government officials throughout trade negotiations and policy development. Paired with market context and policy background, the metrics can help IDFA members pinpoint priority regions and product opportunities while giving U.S. officials additional insight into dairy export markets.
Central Asia has not traditionally been regarded as a priority region for U.S. exporters due to the post-Soviet region’s deep economic and political ties with Russia. Even so, there are encouraging signs of a strong future. Growing populations, pro-business reforms, tech-forward policies and shifting geopolitical dynamics are creating new momentum. Central Asia represents a collection of frontier markets, with Uzbekistan being the strongest near-term opportunity for U.S. dairy exporters. Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan are also emerging markets that warrant long-term dairy relationship-building and export opportunities.
